Why use PDFWix to resize PDFs

Common uses for resizeing PDFs

How to Convert PDF Pages to A4 or Letter

  1. Add your PDF — Drop in the document whose pages need a different size.
  2. Pick the new size — A4, US Letter, US Legal, A3, A5 or Tabloid. Each page is scaled to fit without cropping.
  3. Set a margin — Drag the margin slider in millimetres to keep content clear of the printer's edge or leave binding room.
  4. Resize and download — Click Resize pages. Text stays vector, so it is still selectable and searchable.

Quick answer

To change PDF page size free: open PDFWix Change PDF Page Size, add your PDF, pick A4, Letter, Legal, A3 or A5, set a margin in millimetres if you want one, and click Resize pages. Every page is scaled to fit the new sheet with its text still selectable.

How PDFWix Change PDF Page Size works

PDFWix Change PDF Page Size embeds each original page as a vector form XObject with pdf-lib and draws it onto a new page of the target dimensions — A4 (595.28 × 841.89 pt), Letter (612 × 792 pt), Legal, A3 or A5 — scaled by the smaller of the width and height ratios so nothing is cropped. Because pages are embedded rather than rasterised, text remains selectable and searchable and fonts stay embedded. Margins are converted from millimetres at 72 points per inch.

A4 vs Letter vs Legal — and why margins matter

A4 measures 210 × 297 mm and is the standard almost everywhere outside North America. US Letter is 216 × 279 mm: slightly wider and noticeably shorter. Legal keeps Letter's width but stretches to 356 mm for contracts. Because A4 is taller and narrower, converting Letter to A4 leaves a little space top and bottom, while A4 to Letter has to shrink the page slightly to fit the shorter sheet — which is exactly what a printer's "fit to page" setting does, only without your control. Margins are the second half of the problem. Most desktop printers cannot print within roughly 5 mm of the paper edge, so a PDF whose content runs to the very edge loses a sliver. Adding a 10 mm margin here scales the content inwards so it prints intact, and a 20–25 mm margin on the binding side leaves room for a punch or a comb binder. If you would rather trim away existing white space than add more, Crop PDF does the opposite job, and Multiple Pages per Sheet fits several pages onto one sheet to save paper.
