HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format used by iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. Apple adopted it because HEIC stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPG while maintaining the same visual quality, making it ideal for device storage. The problem is compatibility. Despite being around for several years, HEIC support outside the Apple ecosystem remains inconsistent. Windows — Windows 10 and 11 require a paid extension from the Microsoft Store to open HEIC files natively. Without it, HEIC photos appear as unsupported file types in File Explorer and most Windows applications. Android — Android devices cannot open HEIC files without a third-party app. Sharing iPhone photos directly with Android contacts frequently results in files the recipient cannot view. Web…
Converting HEIC to JPG involves a small, controlled quality reduction because JPG uses lossy compression. In practice the difference is invisible to the human eye at standard export quality settings. HEIC uses more efficient compression than JPG — the same visual quality is achievable at roughly half the file size. When converting to JPG, some of that efficiency is traded for universal compatibility. The output JPG will typically be larger than the original HEIC but will look identical when viewed or printed. PDFWix converts HEIC to JPG at high quality by default, preserving the visual content of the original photo with no perceptible quality difference. EXIF metadata — including capture date, location, and camera settings — is preserved in the output JPG.

Yes. EXIF metadata including capture date, GPS location, camera model, and orientation is preserved in the output JPG files.
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container format standard. HEIC is the specific variant that uses HEVC compression — the format iPhones produce. In practice they are the same thing and most converters support both. PDFWix handles both HEIC and HEIF files.
Yes. If you need a lossless conversion with transparency support, use the JPG to PDF tool which also accepts HEIC, or select PNG as the output format if the option is shown. For most sharing and compatibility purposes JPG is the better choice.
JPG uses lossy compression, while HEIC uses HEVC compression — both are lossy, but HEIC achieves similar visual quality at smaller file sizes. Converting HEIC to JPG at high quality settings produces a file that is visually indistinguishable from the original HEIC photo at typical viewing sizes. PDFWix converts at maximum JPG quality (quality factor 95) — the resulting JPG looks identical to the HEIC original on screen and in print.
Windows 10 and 11 require the HEVC Video Extensions codec (available free from the Microsoft Store) to open HEIC files natively. Without it, HEIC photos appear as blank thumbnails. The easiest workaround without installing anything is to convert HEIC to JPG using PDFWix — JPG opens natively in every version of Windows, Android, and Linux without additional software.
Open pdfwix.com/heic-to-jpg in Chrome or Edge on Windows 11 — no software installation needed. Drag your HEIC files in, click Convert to JPG, and download. Your photos are converted in your browser and never uploaded to any server. This is faster than installing the HEVC Video Extensions codec from the Microsoft Store, and works even if your Windows account does not have administrator rights.
iPhone photos are saved in HEIC format by default from iOS 11 onwards. Windows cannot open HEIC files without the HEVC Video Extensions codec (available free from the Microsoft Store) or a conversion tool. The fastest solution: convert your HEIC files to JPG using PDFWix HEIC to JPG — JPG opens natively in every version of Windows without any additional software or codecs.
PDFWix HEIC to JPG supports batch conversion — upload multiple HEIC files at once and all are converted to JPG simultaneously. There is no file count limit. Note: HEIC and HEIF are the container formats; JPEG and JPG are the same format (JPEG is the full name, JPG is the common file extension). PDFWix outputs standard .jpg files compatible with all devices and applications.
To then convert your JPG photos into a PDF document, use JPG to PDF. If you need to convert PDF pages to JPG images instead, use PDF to JPG. Need to compress your converted photos after converting? Use compress PDF if they are in a PDF, or compress the JPGs before converting.
