Comparing a converted file with reader settings.
To make a dark mode PDF free: open PDFWix Dark Mode PDF, add your PDF, leave the soft dark grey setting on and click Make a dark mode PDF. You get a dark copy that opens the same way in every reader — keep your original, because the dark version's text is no longer selectable.
PDFWix Dark Mode PDF renders each page with pdf.js at the chosen resolution, then remaps every pixel's luminance on the canvas: the soft setting compresses the inverted range to roughly a #1e1e1e background with #e6e6e6 text, which keeps contrast comfortable rather than harsh. The re-coloured pages are embedded as JPEG images in a new PDF of the same dimensions, so the dark copy is picture-based and its text is no longer selectable. Keep the original for searching and copying. Nothing is uploaded.
A straight negative flips white to pure black and black to pure white. It works, but the very high contrast can be tiring, and photographs turn into unreadable negatives. The soft setting instead lands the page on a dark grey around #1e1e1e with text near #e6e6e6 — closer to the night themes used by e-readers and code editors, and much easier on the eyes over a long session. There is one honest trade-off. Because PDF colours live inside page drawing instructions, changing them means redrawing each page and saving it as a picture. That keeps the layout perfect but removes the text layer, so the dark copy cannot be searched or copied from, and its file size is usually larger. Always keep the original: use it with PDF to Text & Markdown when you need to quote a passage, and run the dark copy through Compress PDF if it is too big to email. Switch on "leave photos and charts in their original colours" to keep figures readable in a paper.
Background colour: ≈ #1e1e1e in soft mode · Text layer: Removed — pages become images · Processing: 100% in your browser
Keep the original for quoting and searching — PDF to Text & Markdown pulls out passages, and Compress PDF shrinks the dark copy if it is large. For printing, Grayscale PDF is the right tool instead.
Open PDFWix Dark Mode PDF, add your PDF and click Make a dark mode PDF. You get a dark copy that opens the same way in any reader, for free.
Switch off the soft dark grey option to get a full negative, where white becomes black and black becomes white.
No. Re-colouring means the pages are redrawn as images, so keep your original for searching and copying.
Usually yes, because pages become pictures. Choose the Screen quality setting or run it through Compress PDF.
Yes. The colours are baked into the file, so any reader on any device shows it dark.
No. Pages are drawn and re-coloured inside this browser tab.
Printing rather than reading? Grayscale PDF saves colour ink. For page pictures use PDF to PNG, and Compress PDF keeps the dark copy small enough to email.
