About PDFWix

PDFWix is a privacy-first PDF toolkit built by a small team.

Why we built PDFWix

Every other 'free' PDF tool we tried at 11pm on a Sunday asked for an email, watermarked the result, or capped us at two tasks per hour. PDFWix is the version of these tools we wanted to use ourselves — free, with no daily cap, no signup wall before download, and no watermark on the output. Most tools run in your browser via WebAssembly so your files don't get uploaded at all.

How the project is funded

The web app is free and ad-free. We sustain the project through a pay-as-you-go developer API for businesses that need to merge, compress, sign or convert PDFs programmatically at volume. If the API ever covers the bills, the web app gets bigger and faster — not paywalled.

What we are not

Not venture-backed. Not a paywalled SaaS pretending to be free. Not Adobe Acrobat — for advanced AcroForm authoring, certified redaction, or enterprise SSO, Adobe is still the right tool. PDFWix covers the 90% of everyday PDF tasks the other 10% never need.

Built on a Privacy-First Architecture

PDFWix was built on one technical principle: your documents should never have to leave your device for routine PDF tasks.

Most online PDF tools were built in the 2010s when browser capabilities were limited — server processing was the only option. WebAssembly changed this. It brings near-native performance to browser code, making it possible to run professional-grade PDF libraries — compression, rendering, manipulation — entirely client-side.

PDFWix is built on this architecture from the ground up. Twenty-two of the 24 tools use client-side PDF manipulation via WebAssembly. The two server-side tools use in-memory processing with a no-disk-write guarantee.

This matters for: legal professionals handling confidential client documents; healthcare workers processing patient records; financial teams working with sensitive statements and filings; and anyone who has ever wondered where their file actually goes when they use an online PDF tool.

For PDFWix browser-side tools, the answer is: nowhere. It never left your device.

Our mission and privacy-first philosophy

Our mission is simple: make every common PDF task free, fast and private — and keep it that way. We believe a one-off PDF edit shouldn't require an email address, a credit card, or a $19.99/month subscription. We also believe your documents are your documents: tax returns, medical letters, contracts, ID scans and family paperwork should never need to touch a third-party server just to be merged or compressed. That's why every tool we can build in WebAssembly runs in your browser by default. The small handful of tools that need a server (currently Protect PDF, Unlock PDF and a few HEIC fallbacks) transit over TLS 1.3, run in memory only, and are discarded the moment the response is returned. We never write uploads to disk, never log file contents, never train AI on them, and never repurpose them for anything else. The same rules apply to our paid developer API — privacy isn't a free-tier feature, it's the product.
